The season has come to a close. On Sept. 5th we ventured to the track for our last race. We knew we needed to have a clean night to maintain our 3rd points position. The possibility existed for a 2nd place if we beat Greg Sr. by more than 2 positions. First place would be secured by J. Yagmin with a top 12, no matter what Greg or I did. After starting 26th and driving an extremely loose car (especially down low where it had been so good lately) we were coming up thru the field and looking at a possible top 5 with less than 5 laps to go. Greg and John Porter were "staging" a heated battle ahead of us. With 2 to go I had a run on both of them going into turn 1. I was chopped down into and struck hard in my right front. The car was going to spin, I'm along for the ride? No. Mashed the gas and turned left. The car did a 360 and only lost a few positions with no caution. Was able to bring home a 10th place finish and secured the 3rd place over-all season.
Steven drove the mechanics race held after all the normal features were completed. Steven had never really even sat in the 14 machine with all the race equipment on(suit, gloves, helmet, belts ect.).With no practice at all he started 2nd and led for a little bit in turns 1-2. He was turned and had an infield ride on the 2nd lap. Near the end of the race he got loose and spun the car TO THE RIGHT in turn 2. He was able to keep the car off the wall. Overall he did well. The car was able to be driven onto the trailer and he got some laps. A good night indeed.
The month started off with a bang. The 1st of Aug. the #14 was the best it had been. Very fast. From a starting position of 28th this driver avoided a few wrecks, and was lightly involved in a few others. With about 4 laps to go and making a move on 4th, the belts came off of the power steering and water pump. A chance to gain major points and have a very good finish were dashed. With major help from the #30, Charles Beal, we put a better pulley set-up on the car.
On the 5th of August we ventured up to Seekonk. Having never even seen this track, I was a little nervous. Wow was that unjustified. Seekonk is a very fun and interesting track to run. We were fast in practice, and even faster in the race. Starting 18th in a field of 22, we ended up 2nd.
The 8th of August was almost another rain-out. With a very wet infield we were told to race as clean as possible as they were not going to throw the caution for " a little water on the track". Well that little water was major at times. The entire race was a matter of survival. The 14 machine received extensive front end damage, but was able to bring home a 6th place finish.
The 15th of August was another great night. Greg Moran recorded win # 2 for the season and we finished 3rd. With a last lap accident involving some of the point leaders ,who were running behind us as we took the white flag, the points battle has tightened up.
August 22nd. WIN WIN WIN What can I say? Starting midpack with a car that would hold the bottom, it wasn't long before we were in the top 5. After a caution on lap 8 we were able to drive forward to second. Reeling in the leader another caution flew. One lap after the restart we were able to cross over to the low line and get under Joe Campbell. We ran side by side for several laps. It was a great duel that never saw any paint traded between us. With 3 to go the caution flew again for one final restart. Joe slipped back a little into a battle for second with Greg Moran. That pack got busy real quick with John Porter and Greg Moran Jr. joining the fray. Maintaining a clean line was all it took to Win from there.
August 29th. WOW Win #2 Two in a row?! Incredible. After starting 23rd, the 14 machine was involved in a backstretch melee that had us spinning into the infield. On the re-start we were 30th, and all I was thinking of was trying to salvage a top ten finish. The car was on rails and dangerous fast down low. We steadily picked off cars and before i knew it I was trying to chase down Greg Moran Sr's number 63. He had a half straightaway lead when I got into 2nd. I was able to catch him and as we got the white flag I was there. We went down the backstretch side-by-side and I was able to get a slighly better run thru turn 3-4. Was able to beat Greg to the line by about a half fender length. Larry' Auto Machine steam comes thru for us again.
The month of June ended on a very high note. Greg Jr., Sr. and myself finished 2nd-3rd-4th on the 27th. It was an awesome race, and will be remembered fondly by all of us.
July has been a great month of racing and raining. 2 races , 2 rainouts. A 7th and a second place has moved us into 5th in points.
Teresa Barrett got her first taste of turning left and going fast on the 25th. The track did a "guys and dolls" special women on wheels race. Yours truly drove the first 5 laps and left the car in 3rd. Teresa went out with intentions of "not wrecking and having fun". Well, she did all of that and brought the #14 machine home in 4th place. Congrats on a great run
We are making plans to go to Seekonk raceway in Mass. on the 5th of August with our cars. We will see how that works out.
Opening Day May 9th
The season has officially started. The 14 car performed well. The driver wasn't too bad either. From a drawn starting spot of 23rd with a field of 35 we were going pretty good. The cars' feature handling was the result of a great deal of help from Bill Ingram after having an extremely loose car in practice. We worked our way forward from the start. An incident in turn 3-4 about halfway damaged the front of the car and had us restarting in the back. Went to the high side of the track and worked up to an 11th place finish.
May 16th was a rainout after getting to the track and unloading first, of course.
May 23rd
While unloading the car the oil pressure seemed low at an idle. Would build up but did not seem steady. Under a load on the track for practice it went to zero. Shut car down and loaded it. later found out the oil was thinned due to the fuel pump having a crack and pumping gas straight into the oil pan as well as up to the carb.
May 30th
The car was on rails. Started 12th and got shuffled back during the initial lap. Moved forward and had the lead after 5 laps completed. Maintained lead thru several restarts and had the car to beat. 4 laps from finish with a straightaway lead the power steering belt came off. Had to slow corner entry or risk wiping out. Was passed with 2 to go. Last lap the fan belt also came off. Finished 3rd.
October was quite a month for this driver. First.....Due to Greg Moran Jr. injuring himself , I was tasked with running his car for the Fall Finale race at Waterford. The first weekend (prior to the rainout) I spun during second practice due to an extremely loose condition. Was able to keep the car off the wall, and was WAY out of the racing groove, and got creamed. The right front frame rail was bent up 14 inches or so. "The Crew" worked their tails off and fixed the car that night. The next day washed out, and we went back the following weekend. The car was pretty good, but we blew the transmission the morning of our feature. We towed the car to Moran's Service and swapped out the tranny, and back to the track we went. I started 11, and Greg Sr. started 15. By the end of lap 2 we were 5th and 6th and moving up when the tranny started leaking. Black Flag, and a caution at same time. the crew tried to fix the leaking pan, but to no avail. Greg went on for a 2nd place finish.
The World Series at Thompson was not much better. Friday during the heat race I got the car way out of shape and had relatively minor contact with the wall, but was out just the same. Due to a low car count(including a missing Champion) we automatically qualified for Sunday's race. The race did not start out well as I had an infield excursion to avoid a spin. With no caution I was catching up to the main pack and passing a few slower cars, when a new driver came up into me hard. Was able to keep the car straight and pulled away from that 3 car pack with ease. About 2 laps later, and catching the tail of the main pack, the cam broke in the motor. Luckily no other damage internally.
At this time we are planning on keeping the Thompson car and running it on a very limited schedule next year. We are planning on running a Waterford Super-X car next year full time
